The ancient Chinese believed that energy-forces called meridians ran through the body. Blockages along these meridians could lead to sickness and other ailments, including infertility. Chinese acupuncture practitioners treat these blockages by painlessly inserting slender needles at different points along the meridians.

Today many health professionals believe that acupuncture stimulates nerves and causes the body to release chemicals that help it to heal itself. So how could this impact your fertility?

The use of acupuncture for fertility is just beginning to be explored by modern fertility experts. Studies are already showing that women who choose acupuncture along with other fertility boosting strategies have a higher rate of conception.

It is possible that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce more endorphins, which help relax the body and make you more open to conception. Relaxation and stress relief have long been proven to help women conceive.

Acupuncture may also stimulate the nervous system and allow it to function more effectively. When this occurs your body receives all the signals that it needs. These signals range from the already mentioned cue to produce more endorphins to signals that tell your reproductive organs to function.

Your body needs clear and open nerve channels to interpret signals to produce the hormones that help to make your body open to conception. It is also vital that it get all signals to produce the hormones that will sustain your baby once conception has occurred.

It has also been suggested that acupuncture may help to improve blood flow to the body, including to the vital ovaries, where your eggs are stored and ripen each month. Increased blood flow to the uterus allows a thick and nourishing lining to build up in preparation for your newly conceived baby.

Research is pointing to acupuncture as a viable and cost effective way to improving fertility and overall health. Acupuncture practitioners also study herbs and use them in tandem with acupuncture techniques. A trained acupuncturist will be able to advise you on herbs to boost your fertility along with your acupuncture treatment.

  1. Thank you for pointing out the benefits of acupuncture and infertility. Yes, acupuncture works with the energetic systems to allow the body to re-balance itself so that it can function in the way it is supposed to. The thought that acupuncture stimulates nerves is just one theory on how acupuncture works. In fact, acupuncture does not aim to stimulate the nerves directly (we don’t needle the nerves), but by bringing the body back into homeostasis via the energy pathways that flow within our bodies, the endocrine/hormonal, nervous, digestive, etc. systems are more able to ‘do their job’ so to speak. This could mean getting a woman’s cycle more regular so that conception occurs. It can also mean helping both the man and the woman with stress, or any other issue that is preventing conception.

As you mention, acupuncture works well with IVF, but acupuncture can also be a very effective and more cost effective means of treating infertility by itself, too.

Conception shouldn’t be a frustrating process, yet it is for many. So thank you for mentioning acupuncture as a natural & safe way to address the difficulties that may occur. It’s good for everyone to know the natural options that exist!

Sorry about what you are going through, that must be terrible. I am not a medical doctor and certainly cannot diagnosis conditions but I do know that diet (particularly artificial sweeteners) have been mistakenly diagnosed as MS. I would check Mercola.com, Naturalnews.com and Earthclinic.com for both your symptoms and MS.

    Good luck!!

As an acupuncturist who also sees many people incorrectly diagnosed, I would recommend getting several opinions if you haven’t done so already. These opinions would hopefully include alternative practitioners - we see the body systems from a different perspective and acupuncture can help to understand where the burning and nerve-type pains may be coming from. And as Sheryl mentioned, there are numerous things could mimic MS symptoms. As we are also not Western MDs, we can’t give Western diagnoses like MS, but acupuncture can help you feel better if it is all a result of an imbalance in your systems affecting your muscular, nervous, and other systems. Of course, if there is something structural, a chiropractor or Osteopathic Dr may need to come into play to re-align something that may be impinging on a nerve. Most practitioners should work hand-in-hand to find the best way to help you feel better, hopefully without just “labeling” you and giving meds.

Of course I’m biased towards acupuncture :) but I do think that finding a qualified Licensed Acupuncturist in your area is a good start to helping you feel better. Best wishes to you!
